I should have taken a picture of it in the pot. But it was very good. I actually made dinner two nights in a row. I think that’s a record for the last couple of years. I used the recipe in the Joy of Cooking and it wasn’t what Thomas expected. He said that an old Italian Fire Captain made it for them a million years ago but it had a different sauce. I seem to recall that in northern Italy they use less tomato saucy sauces. This one just had a can of tomatos so it was more of a clearish sauce. It didn’t go well on the pasta, because it didn’t stick. I just looked at what’s-her-name’s from Everyday Italian and hers is almost the same, except it adds capers. I would have added those on my own, but I couldn’t find the jar. Rachael Ray’s has more tomatos and looks more tomato-y.

Yesterday we turned in our final project for the capstone class (sort of like a senior project) so I am done, done, done with my core classes. I have 3 or 4 more electives to take. I am not doing well in the Survey of Western Art … well no I did well on assignments 2 & 3 and she let me redo the first one. But the teacher is a bit of a flake. She was supposed to have had the midterm posted last Monday, which it wasn’t. So I ignored it all week because I was working on my project for the capstone class. I finally get that finished on Saturday and see about the mid-term and see that it closed 45 minutes earlier. I don’t see why I should be penalized because the teacher posted it 2 days late (she had a message on the website). So I sent her an e-mail to that effect. I don’t know how this will affect my grade. I just want a C. All they care about at UofPhx is if I pass the class, they don’t transfer the grade.

02/14/07 Happy Valentine’s Day February 14, 2007

Christopher is quite the kid. He managed to sneak out of the house, buy me a valentine card, sign it, put it on his changing table, and crawl back into his crib without me being any the wiser. Thomas was quite sly as well, but at least he has a driver’s license and a car so he can run errands without me worrying. There was a heart shaped plate of Dove dark chocolate and a cute little mini rose plant waiting for me in front of the coffee maker. And there were cute stickers all over the house and my car. A very nice morning indeed.

I got Thomas a bag of kisses with almonds and a certificate for a massage from someone who really knows how to do it right (that would not be me). I bought Christopher the Elmo fuzzy Valentine book.

I am not overly interested in going out on a night were everyone else is going out to celebrate the same day. So we are getting take out Chinese food and watching a movie. I would imagine it is hard to find a baby sitter for tonight as well. I don’t mind staying in, I hope Thomas does not mind as well.

I can’t stand it anymore. For the last two days, on every cable news network, it has been non stop coverage of the death of Anna Nicole Smith. Look, I am sorry she is dead. And my heart goes out to her family. Really it does. But this is not a major news story.

Not even close.

As a veteran of this war in Iraq, I beg all Americans to please keep things in perspective while the networks fill you with images of a buxom blond celebrity who was only famous for being famous.

CNN, Fox and MSNBC are all guilty of it. MSNBC (which was really getting better for a while) has been the worst. Yesterday afternoon, while a war raged in Iraq, Hammas met with Fatah in Mecca, and a House investigation into botched Iraq reconstruction efforts continued on Capitol Hill, MSNBC gave us over three straight hours of almost entirely uninterrupted coverage of the death of the spokesperson for TRIMSPA. The coverage of Smith’s death has rivaled that of former President Ford’s.

The week I got back home from Iraq in 2004, the number one news story in America was Janet Jackson’s breast being exposed at the Super Bowl. I was flabbergasted to see that this was what the American media cared about, as my friends were taking mortar rounds and sniper fire in Ramadi and Tikrit. Now, three years later, troops are returning home to see this crap about Smith on TV 24-7.

Anna Nicole Smith died about 24 hours ago. Over the same time period, at least three of our troops and countless Iraqis have died in a war that might turn out to be the greatest foreign policy blunder in our country’s history. Even as I write this, all three networks are covering a live press conference by Smith’s attorney. I want to put my fist through the TV.

Wake up, America. This is not news. It does not matter. Think of our troops. Think of the Iraqis. Think of the families of people serving in Iraq right now.

You want to really support the troops? Tell the media to pay attention to the war they are fighting and dying in! Call the networks and complain, write letters to the producers, and change the damn channel.

02/06/07 Escrow February 6, 2007

As defined by dictionary.com, escrow in this case is …

3. in escrow, in the keeping of a third person for delivery to a given party upon the fulfillment of some condition.

So yes folks, our old house is in escrow! Hallelujah! (I had to look that one up.) So if everything goes as it should, some nice couple will take ownership of our old house by March 23rd at 5pm. So at 5:30pm you all are invited out somewhere for celebratory margaritas!!!

02/03/07 Happy Birthday to me … February 3, 2007

… Happy Birthday to me! I love my birthday. So far I’ve gotten four cards and one physical present and one announcement of a present. It’s 9am and Christopher is already napping. Playing with his brothers tires him out! He doesn’t know what birthdays are, but the wrappings and boxes sure are fun to play with.

The taco fest is tomorrow. It’s too annoying to explain why it’s tomorrow and not today. While I know how to make mom’s tacos … mom does make them best!

The picture is the envelope from the card Jonah gave me. He did the drawing. I wanted to share it.

02/02/07 Groundhog Day and I am a Fish Head February 2, 2007

It’s official, Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring. As far as I can remember Phil is full of crap so we’ll see what sort of winter we continue to have.

Last night Thomas took me to McGrath’s for my birthday. We went on Thursday because the McGrath’s specials are Sunday to Thursday and we have kids on Thursday who can babysit Christopher. I had a delicious pomegranite martini! Oh, yeah and I had the crab special where you get crab alfredo, crab cakes and a couple of crab legs. They do a thing where they put a huge paper mache fish head hat on you, put a dish of ice cream in front of you, and take a polaroid of you. I’ll scan in the polariod tonight. I am just not photogenic.
