Liz' s Musings's

Liz's musings on life – mostly her kids though.

12/31/07 It’s already 2008 in Australia December 31, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 11:23 am

That’s what I learned when I checked the news at earlier this morning. Sheesh, I hadn’t even finished my cup of Dutch Bros decaf Cafe Aulait (sp?) and they’re already into next year. So happy 2008 Australia!

We woke up to ice this morning. That’s what happens when the temperature drops below freezing before 10pm and is still there at 8am. It wasn’t too bad for me, I just drove the long-ass way to work and never went above 25mph. Despite the fact that I’ve been a pansy driving here for the last 5 years it occurs to me that I used to drive in hideous weather. I spent 15 years traveling in the winter (why did I always have go to Florida in August?) and driving in snow and ice from November through March. Amy (if she’s watching) can vouch for me! I spent a lot of time in the VA/DC area during the winter. I think I went shopping with her the weekend after Thanksgiving when RJ was freshly hatched. I’ve driving through a snow storm in New Hampshire and spent two weeks driving in February weather in Chicago. So what’s my problem here? I don’t know, so I sucked it up and drove to work … and I got here in one piece. I remembered to let momentum pull me through a turn (rather than skid through one) and to pump my brakes if it got a little slick (only happened once). I’m a big girl now!

I think I forgot to post that the results from my 12 hour, glucose drinking, 4 needle stick, bloodletting session indicate that I have mild gestational diabetes. So I get to go to the Centre for Healthy Living and be counseled this afternoon. Then on Friday I see a genetics counselor. And on Monday I have my monthly appoint with the OB. Somebody stick a fork in me to see if I’m done! I really hate all of this crap. Women have been having babies for centuries without all of this fall-der-all.

12/29/07 After all that, no envelopes December 29, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 2:56 pm

I managed to make some christmas cards this year and no one will see them … I can’t find any envelopes. They’re in a box in this office somewhere, but I don’t know where. So when you get a store bought card, don’t think I slighted you … everyone got them. Apparently I have 6 boxes of them. We got them for 90% off at a department store’s going out of business sale. But they’re all signed and stuffed with the family newsletter. Now all I have to do is seal them and take them to the post office to get postage. I think I can do the first part later today and the second part on Monday. They WILL have a 2007 postmark!!!

Well, Thomas is going back to the doctor this afternoon. After three days of muscle relaxants and pain killers he is not much better. One of us needs to be shot to be put out of our misery.

Last night mom and Mary brought over Christopher’s iMac (his christmas present from Grammy) and he just loved it without it even being on. I need to find a place for it and get him a wireless internet thingy. We may have another free port on the router, but we don’t have any place to run the cable. Mary made desktop shortcuts for some age appropriate websites for him. I also am going to put a bunch of pictures on it so he can just have a rotating slide show. He loves pictures of himself and the family.

I need a cookie …

12/28/07 My Pregnancy: 31 Weeks December 28, 2007

Or 9 Weeks To Go!!!

This week, your baby measures over 16 inches long. She weighs about 3.3 pounds (try carrying four navel oranges) and is heading into a growth spurt. She can turn her head from side to side, and her arms, legs, and body are beginning to plump out as needed fat accumulates underneath her skin. She’s probably moving a lot, too, so you may have trouble sleeping because your baby’s kicks and somersaults keep you up. Take comfort: All this moving is a sign that your baby is active and healthy.

This week we go from vegetables to fruit …

12/26/07 At least it’s not his kidneys … December 26, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 2:14 pm

Well we thought Thomas was having another kidney stone. But the doctor says it’s muscular so it’s pain pills and muscle relaxers for him. It made for an interesting Christmas. He spent a good part of the day in bed on Monday and all of Tuesday in bed. Needless to say that put the burden of work on me. Thank goodness the kids helped a lot on Christmas Eve or we may still be waiting for clean silverware and stuff to be put out. It’s hard enough throwing a party but when you’re 7 months pregnant and having hip problems it just becomes worse. I am thankful that I also had a weekend before the party to do things in stages. I think the hardest part was keeping Christopher’s toys out of the living room.

Unfortunately Christmas morning it was just Christopher and I opening presents by ourselves. He had a great time finding out what Santa left for him. He also loved the ornament that Julie sent us (it was Pooh and he was able to name all of the characters on it). He also got some cool clothes from Honey and Poppy. He’s not old enough to hate getting clothes for Christmas so he ooh’d and ah’d over them. Santa gave him two Thomas the Tank Engine dvd’s and a Thomas bank that he thought were pretty swell. He ate his shortbread cookies for breakfast, along with his Cheerios. I have a gillion pictures, I just need to get them uploaded. My new camera is fantabulous and I am having a great time taking pictures of the kiddo!

Currently Christopher is at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. I let him have a sleepover there just incase I had to take Thomas to the emergency room last night. Thankfully that didn’t happen! Christopher had ‘hot chokit’ with Grandpa this morning 🙂

It’s really bad when you have to go to work to relax …

12/25/07 Merry Christmas December 25, 2007

I think I survived the carnage. The party was a rousing success … everyone went home stuffed and happy. All of the food turned out really well, and I was a little nervous because the veggies were a new recipe and I cooked the beef using different instructions.

The teenagers stayed mostly to the family room and the rest of us stayed mostly to the living room. I think Christopher liked being with the teenagers, because that’s where his brothers were.

I’ve gotten one load of dishes through the dishwasher. I just need to empty it, reload it, then run it again … maybe later. Christpher is being rather high maintenance this morning. He now wants to stamp now …

12/24/07 Progress Report … how I am trying not to kill the kids December 24, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 2:38 pm

The oven is preheating.

The roast is coming to room temperature and has it’s crust of kosher salt, horseradish, garlic, – oh crap I forgot the garlic … ok I’m back now, had to scrape it all off and add the garlic – rosemary, thyme, and olive oil. Well now that it’s taken so long, the roast is in the oven.

The vegetables are blanched. They’ll get saute’d with shallots later.

The cookies are frosted … oh yeah, I have a picture [going to get camera] Now you can see why I don’t paint or draw freehand … it’s just not something I do well. Royal Icing is some weird stuff. I added green food colouring to some and red food colouring to some and kept some white.

The little smokies are in the crockpot doing what they do in catsup, grape jelly, mustard, and hot sauce.

The apple cider is in the other crockpot simmering with cinnamon sticks, allspice, and cloves.

The house is relatively tidy (notice I said relatively). Some day we’ll actually be totally unpacked and it’ll be time to move.

The potatos need to be washed, cubed and boiled. The appetizers need to be put out. Some need to be assembled and others just need to be unpackaged.

Packages need to be wrapped.

I have two and a half hours. I just ate a turkey sandwich … maybe I’ll make it to bedtime.

12/24/07 A tree and some insomnia

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 3:34 am

We finally got a tree yesterday afternoon! Hooray! Thomas and the boys got it while Christopher was napping and we got the lights on and most of the decorations (that I was going to use) on it before he woke up. So he woke up to this wonderful surprise! He’s been enjoying the tree at daycare so I was really excited to see his reaction at home. He loves the ornaments. I put the soft ones on the lower half of the tree and some (only some) of the breakable ones at the top. I only put about 2/3rd of the ornaments up because I knew they’d probably just come crashing down.

Oh, it’s 3:30am right now and I am wide awake.

I also got my Christmas present a little early yesterday. It’s a Nikon D40x camera and it ROCKS!!! My old Olympus that I’ve had for about 7 years is giving up the ghost. It keeps eating memory cards, which is a bummer when there are pictures on them that you want. So I got my present early so I could have a camera to document this year’s festivities. I was able to take a picture of the tree (see above) and have it come out and not be blurry. Way cool! It’s light and fast too!

I think I’m going to go make Royal Icing for the sugar cookies. They didn’t turn out half bad using Alton Brown’s recipe.

[Later] Well it’s 4:15 now and the Royal Icing is done. That is some nasty stuff. I see why they use it to construct confectionary things. It’s like glue … very sweet glue! I also refilled the coffee bean canister. While I was out in the garage getting the coffee I found the bag of nuts so I dug out the nut bowl and cracker while I was at it. And here I sit in a house that is just too damn hot. Probably one of the reasons I can’t sleep …
