12/24/07 Progress Report … how I am trying not to kill the kids December 24, 2007

The oven is preheating.

The roast is coming to room temperature and has it’s crust of kosher salt, horseradish, garlic, – oh crap I forgot the garlic … ok I’m back now, had to scrape it all off and add the garlic – rosemary, thyme, and olive oil. Well now that it’s taken so long, the roast is in the oven.

The vegetables are blanched. They’ll get saute’d with shallots later.

The cookies are frosted … oh yeah, I have a picture [going to get camera] Now you can see why I don’t paint or draw freehand … it’s just not something I do well. Royal Icing is some weird stuff. I added green food colouring to some and red food colouring to some and kept some white.

The little smokies are in the crockpot doing what they do in catsup, grape jelly, mustard, and hot sauce.

The apple cider is in the other crockpot simmering with cinnamon sticks, allspice, and cloves.

The house is relatively tidy (notice I said relatively). Some day we’ll actually be totally unpacked and it’ll be time to move.

The potatos need to be washed, cubed and boiled. The appetizers need to be put out. Some need to be assembled and others just need to be unpackaged.

Packages need to be wrapped.

I have two and a half hours. I just ate a turkey sandwich … maybe I’ll make it to bedtime.

    The cookies taste great, Liz. Were these Alton Brown’s recipe? I’m munching on one now, enjoying a cup of tea and watching “Modern Marvels:Christmas Tech”.

    Like you, I’m not food of piping icing. I finally gave up—I use plastic cookie cutters that stamp design and cut them out. Then I paint them using cookie paint (egg yolk & food coloring). Not as sweet as iced cookies but easier on the temper!

    Is packing/unpacking ever done? You are unpacking & I am packing—purging books, decorations, toys, etc. St. Vinnies is making another pickup next week & I’m trying to fill their truck.

    The sugar cookies are Alton Brown’s recipe, as is his royal icing. I saw Paula Deen make a similar icing with powdered sugar and milk (no beating forever and a day either). I got better with the piping as time went on. And I saw on Paula’s show that I should have cut the hole in the bag a little smaller. The chocolate chip are just Toll House cookies without the nuts. But I use Safeway’s Indulgence chocolate chips because they’re bigger and better than Nestle’s. The brownies are triple chocolate something from Costco. You get like 6 bags of mix in the box. They are KILLER!
