06/28/08 My parents and RIP Ruffy June 28, 2008

This is a picture of my mom and dad that I took in Hong Kong. I think it’s in front of the Peninsula Hotel. I can’t be sure though. It is either 1974 or 1975. Besides my sister, I think Amy is the only person who would have met my dad. I found a bunch of old photos in a box this morning. I thought the box had Christopher’s baby stuff in it, but it didn’t. Now I need to remember what happened to his box (frowining). In any case, I had a great trip down memory lane. There were also pictures from Hawaii in 1977, Canada in 1978, and loads of pictures from high school. We were all so young then! There are pictures of people I recognise but have no clue who they are or in what context I knew them.

RIP Ruffy – Ruffy died yesterday under a bush in our backyard. She was about 15 years old and had a long and happy life. Thomas and the teenagers are off burying her somewhere out in nature.

06/27/08-B So Many Questions I Didn’t Know I Had! June 27, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 2:06 pm

I’ve been doing some research on what preschools are in my area and that brought me to the Savvy Source website I linked to the other day. Apparently they are selling an e-book that answers questions I didn’t know I had!!!

  • Montessori? Waldorf? Play-based? What do each of these school types mean?
  • What school type is right for my child and does it matter?
  • What is the right age to start preschool? Two? Three? Four?
  • What does the research say about school types?
  • How can I tell if the quality of teaching is high?
  • What kinds of questions should I ask on a school tour?
  • How does my child learn (vs. another) and what kind of school type I should be looking for given his learning style?
  • What are tried and true tips on how to secure a slot for my child?
  • How can I tell if a school “matches” my parenting style and family values?

How do mere mortals make the right choice??? Gah!!! This is starting to stress me out more than I like!!!

06/27/08 Because Yahoo 360 comments are wonky

Here’s my tip for the day. When commenting, copy the comment to the clipboard before clicking Post or Submit or whatever button it has. So if it decides to lose its marbles and not post the comment you can just paste it again into the comment window – provided you can find that again too.

I would change blog platforms but none of them have import utilities that work with Yahoo 360. So I am waiting for them to change platforms, write the necessary utility to get it out of Yahoo 360, and then see if the new blog format they dumped us for will be any better.

It’s going to be a scorcher here this weekend.

06/26/08 Lane County, a column by Bob Welch June 26, 2008

For those of you who don’t live in Eugene or care one whit about track and field you may not know that the Olympic Trials for track and field start this weekend. It’s a huge deal and we’ve been sprucing the city up for quite a while. The paper has a columnist who writes about stuff and today he wrote about Lane County (where Eugene is located). So for those of you who haven’t visited me yet (cough, cough) it may inspire you to head north. It’s called Take time to explore Lane County’s beauty, quirkiness.

06/25/08 Preschool??? June 25, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 8:38 am

Thomas and I have been talking about preschool for Christopher. I think that is a big reason why Thomas is pushing for Christopher to be potty trained (not something that is happening at a very quick pace). Five years ago I never thought I would be thinking about preschool for, not one, but TWO kids!!! So in a funny serendipity one of my favourite bloggers, CitiMama did a column today on a preschool blog that is going local in many cities (no Oregon cities yet!) She’s got a give away going on if you link back to her post so that’s why there’s all of that link love in the previous sentence. I am hoping the new site will give me some help in this area. It looks like a hard decision! I didn’t have any trouble finding a daycare provider for the kids. Another mom from our church called me when Christopher was about 2 months old and told me that her old daycare provider had an opening and did I need daycare? Woohoo! Problem solved. She was a mom who had 5 or 7 kids and I figured she knew how to pick out a daycare so after meeting Ann we were sold. No problem there.

So now to the preschool thing … I figured Christopher could stay at daycare until he needed to start kindergarten. Heck, kindergarten is only two or three hours a day here so he’ll be going to daycare for more than half of the day anyway. Why confuse the kid by putting him in preschool all day then have him go to kindergarten for a few hours then to daycare again. It boggles my mind, I’m sure it would totally throw him. My MIL thinks he should be in preschool now. Thomas thinks maybe in a year. What do you all think? I’m totally at a loss here … this is SO not my area of expertise. Now if Christopher needed his taxes done I am so on it!

06/23/08 Your gas is square June 23, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 11:01 am

Christopher said this while he was getting in the car this morning. It took me a minute to figure out that he meant that the door to the gas tank on my car is square. I asked him if daddy’s gas is round and he said yes. He is either very observant or just says yes to everything. I think it’s a little of both. But more importantly how did he know that was where the gas goes in? We don’t pump our own gas here in Oregon so we stay in the car. And he is not normally with me when I fill up my car. Sometimes he is scary smart. I told someone the other day that he will either blow us up when he is a teenager or invent something miraculous.

If you click “Top Page” above my avatar over there on the left it’ll bring you to my main 360 page. Then on the upper right is my photo stream. Click Photostream and it should bring you to my Flickr pictures.

I added a couple of pictures from Jonah and Micah’s graduations, a couple of pictures of Sarah, one of food and one of Christopher and Thomas.

I think I’ve linked to Julie, Lori, and Mary on Flickr.
