07/30/08 Trying to plan July 30, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 4:51 pm

We never plan things in advance. We live our lives last minute. We’re going to CA on Friday to drop Micah off at the Bowens’ and then get Jonah from Thomas’ sister. Since we never seem to get further south than Santa Rosa, Thomas suggested that we try to see Julie, Dave and the girls on Sunday. I haven’t seen them in a year and I am due for a visit! I had to go home at lunch and I called Julie while I was going home (don’t give me a lecture about talking and driving – I can watch tv, nurse a baby, and deal with a 2 year old all at the same time!). She’s at Great America, sitting in the shade, reading a book! LOL! She’s the mom of teenagers!!! I forgot to ask her what she was reading. And it’s not going to work out to see them anyway 😦

Jonah and I have been texting for the last 15 minutes or so. HIS AUNT IS SPOILING HIM ROTTEN! He went to see Kung Fu Panda in Santa Rosa and is now at Six Flags in Vallejo!

My smaller lens for my camera broke last weekend. I don’t know how, but it is now in UPS’ hands to take back to Nikon to either fix it or replace it. Hopefully it’s still under some sort of warranty. I love my camera! I have a second lens, but it’s 55 – 200 so it’s not good for close up shots.

07/29/08-B Ask and ye shall receive July 29, 2008

There are people out there who are more anal-retentive than I am. I was reading Doodaddy (yeah, I know I’m supposed to be working but I am mired in an incredibly mind-numbing project and I need to take a break every few hundred Excel lines or so) and he mentioned Trixie Tracker. You track sleeping, eating, pooping … and it gives you charts and graphs! And Thomas thought I was loony because I tracked that stuff on a scrap of paper for the first month or so (the doctor liked to know).

Also the internet came to the rescue with something called Tasty Planner. You can create recipies, a meal calendar, and a grocery list. Someone was listening to me!

Now I haven’t tried either of these websites, I just found them a few minutes ago but I just had to share them!!! Don’t you just love the internet?!?

07/29/08 Bye Bye Cousins

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 8:48 am

Thomas’ sister’s kids have been visiting over the summer, one by one – sort of. AJ was here for two weeks, then he was replaced by Cierra when my in-laws spent the week of 4th of July in CA. Donovan came up on Thursday and they went home on Sunday. Christopher loves his cousins! On Monday when he was at my MIL’s he asked where Cierra and Donovan were. My MIL reminded him that they went home. His comment was, “they didn’t say goodbye.” When the cousins left Donovan told my MIL to say goodbye to Christopher. Cierra told my MIL to tell Sarah that she loved her. I don’t know whether Cierra enjoyed shopping or taking care of Sarah more. Anyway Christopher replied that Cierra was his “sister-cousin” and Donovan was his “cousin-friend”. It was one of those “awww” moments!

Why do I feel guilty feeding my family Rice-a-roni? I read a lot of blogs and many of them talk about cooking for families. One of my favourites, CitiMama, usually has Meal Planning Monday. Damn, this woman is organised! She plans her meals for the week; she shops at the farmer’s market; she seems to have it together with this whole feeding the family thing. Why is it so hard for me to do that? It’s not like we don’t have a lot of ingredients to choose from either. We have a relatively full pantry and stand-up freezer. As I am typing this I am remembering that I am not a very good Scrabble player either (stay with me, I have a point). Nor am I a good sew-from-a-pattern person. All three use the ability to take component parts and make a whole. This is not something I am good at apparently. Thomas gets very frustrated with me that food goes bad or that we have all of this stuff and I can’t think of anything to make from it. I get frustrated with me too, but I don’t know what to do about it. I think this is why I used to shop every couple of days when I was single. I had fresh food and I could buy what I needed to make whatever I thought of. This is not very practical now, however.

There was this one episode of Dharma & Greg where Dharma figured out that Greg used a very complex schedule for having sex. It gave the illusion of randomness and spontaneity for Dharma but allowed Greg to have a schedule. Maybe I need this for dinner …

07/28/08 Measurements and stuff about a 3 year old July 28, 2008

Christopher had his 3 year check up on Thursday. I am not so melodramatic to say that it was just yesterday that he had his 3 week checkup but it sure doesn’t seem like 3 years! At 3 years he weights 36lbs and is 40 1/4 inches tall. That’s 75th percentile for weight and 95th percentile for height. He knows his colours, shapes, and letters by sight and can also count up to 20 – sometimes. He likes the number 13 and usually stops there because … he’s bored? likes 13? Dunno. He is, however, not potty trained. This is the only thing keeping him from preschool in September. Oh, well there’s the money thing too but that’s another story. I wonder if preschool does nap time? He also take at least a 2 hour nap every day. Yesterday he took a 3 hour nap. He is a nap taking boy! Speaking of taking, the Mimi Fairy took his binky on Monday. I do not know where he got the name, but for some reason he calls his binky a ‘mimi’. The Mimi Fairy left him a nice card and a pair of Thomas the Tank Engine pajamas. What a cool fairy! Bed and nap times are now more horrific because of this. He is even more whiny and even cries after he is in bed. He does not realise that he wants his binky, he just knows that he is unhappy. His binky provided some level of comfort and he still needs that, in my opinion. So I read to him and rub his back and leave my boy to wimper in bed. It really breaks my heart, especially when a stupid piece of silicone would make him more comfortable and happy.

07/22/08 Give me more rice cereal! July 22, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 3:49 pm

I think Sarah has figured out what the rice cereal is for … eating! I made the usual teaspoon of rice cereal for her last night and Thomas got her to eat every drop. So I made her another teaspoon and she ate every bit of it too! Thomas said she finally seemed to understand that it was for her to eat and she really liked it. I figure another week of cereal and it’ll be time for peas!

I updated my Flickr page with some of the pictures from Jonah’s Facebook album. I still haven’t offloaded the party pictures from the memory card yet. Maybe tonight. Maybe not.

We saw Good Night and Good Luck last night. That was a really good movie! It is scary how there are so many parallels with the Patriot Act and McCarthyism. You could have pulled whole paragraphs of dialog from the movie and applied them directly to what is going on right now. Scary, very scary …

You’d think at the age of 42 I would have asked this question before now … how do toilets work? I get the part in the toilet tank, but what about the toilet bowl? What keeps the water from leaving the bowl and then what makes it leave by flushing? I must be missing something important. I know it’s a bit of a non-sequitor but that is sort of how my brain works.

07/21/08 And then he was three … July 21, 2008

Doncha just love being awake at 4am? Gah! For the last week Sarah’s thing has been to wake up at about 3:30. She just lays there, talks, and blows raspberries. Eventually she starts fussing a little and after a couple of attempts at putting in her binky she goes to sleep about 20 minutes later. In the mean time I wake up and am awake for a while. So here I am being awake for a while.

In hindsight I am sort of glad that no other kids came to Christopher’s birthday. It was sort of overwhelming for him. After he got up we let him open presents from us, Honey & Poppy, and my sister (we saved the art easel and paper for a birthday pressie). He loved everything and wanted to play with it all. I found some Thomas the Tank Engine trains, cars, track, and conductor’s shed on e-bay. Since the set of trains we got over a year ago (the Interactive Railway) at a garage sale is no longer being made we either have to buy new Wooden Railway stuff (crap in my opinion) or find stuff on e-bay. Damn and those e-bay bidders are ruthless too!

His “party” was pretty simple. We went to a park, fed people sandwiches, and had cake. He played in the sand and on the play equipment for a lot of the time. There is also a wading pool and we eventually got him to put his hands in the water. Jonah uploaded some pictures of the event to his Facebook account. At about 1:30 he started asking to go home. I think he was just exhausted from all of the excitement of the day!

In other news … we are 2/3rds of the way through season 3 of Weeds. Man that is a funny show! We don’t get Showtime, so we have to wait until it’s out on dvd to watch it. But the nice thing about that is we can see it all in a few days! The episodes are only 30 minutes long so you’re just really getting into an episode and it ends.

Happy Monday everyone!

07/17/08 Thursday, just one more day to go July 17, 2008

I can take a huge sigh of relief. Month-end is done and I did my financial presentation yesterday. Now I can do other things than just race to get month-end done. However on August 11th the race begins again. At least it’s something you can plan for.

This weekend is Davinci Days in Corvallis. I’ve wanted to go since I moved up here but I hate going to things where you have to park a bazillion miles away and walk in the heat to get somewhere to sit in the heat. It’s also Bohemia Mining Days in Cottage Grove. That looks like it would be fun too. And it’s closer. Probably still hot though.

Sunday is Christopher’s birthday. Safeway has a Thomas the Tank Engine birthday cake that my MIL just told me about. Well she told me about it over a month ago but she reminded me today because clearly I’d forgotten. I have enough trouble remembering yesterday let alone a month ago. Naturally it’s not something you can order from the Safeway website. You can’t do much on their website. I think we’re just going to have a picnic on Sunday with the family. I was hoping my SIL was coming but no such luck. I never got it together to invite any of Christopher’s daycare buddies. For the most part I hate planning parties. I think the only one I like is Christmas Eve because I have a plan and it remains fairly static from year to year. A kid’s birthday party is a logistics issue. I am not good with logistics. And Thomas is Mr. Last Minute and that doesn’t work with logistics either. Fortunately Christopher isn’t old enough to know that he should have friends at a birthday party. Next year I probably won’t be so lucky.
