08/30/08 She rolled! August 30, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 10:12 pm

Sarah rolled over! According to Christopher she did at daycare on Friday but I wasn’t there to witness. If I don’t witness it, it didn’t happen! We had her on her playmat this morning and she had a good old time rolling from her back to her tummy. No reverse rolls though. It’s such a huge milestone and she does it so well!

Sarah is also enjoying her chow! She’s had apples, peaches, pears, carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, and green beans each mixed with rice cereal. There has been no food she didn’t like. She doesn’t chew or take bites (even with no teeth) … she sort of sucks it off of the spoon. It’s strange, Christopher was better at the mechanics of eating, but Sarah is a way better eater!

Christopher got to ride his tricycle on the sidewalk this evening. He is so good at it. He’s almost too big for his trike. We talked about getting some training wheels for one of the two little kids bikes we have.

This morning we drove to the river. There’s a beach where there are lots of ducks and geese (or are they swans?). We usually bring bread to feed them but we didn’t. As we walked down the bike path the birds swam to shore and headed up the grass, because they were expecting us to feed them. They were sorely disappointed! We played at the playground for quite a while until Christopher’s daycare provider walked by. What a surprise! She and a couple of friends have a plot at the community garden. They gave us the tour and it’s a cool place. There’s a community garden by us and they said it’s possible we could get a plot there next year. I love growing vegetables and our house just doesn’t have enough sun. They have a 15′ x 40′ plot. You can grow a lot of veggies in a plot that size!

Tonight it was pizza and a movie, per Jonah’s request. We got Monster-in-Law from Netflix and that’s what we watched. It was funny! People always give JLo crap, but I’ve like every movie I’ve seen her in.

08/29/08 Friday, yes it’s Friday August 29, 2008

I’m not sure which I dislike more – the craziness of the week and a half of month end close or the unstructured-ness of the time in between. I pretty much have to ignore everyone for that week and a half to get my work done so that when it’s over there is a few days of scrambling to fix everyone elses problems. Then I have a week or two of dealing with whatever happens to pop up. This week it’s learning service billing and training a new employee. I think if I had to do billing every day I’d shoot myself. While I’m all for mindless tasks, this is one that is half mindless, half thinking, and half trying to read some bozo’s bad writing. I’ve already complained to a supervisor about a tech’s bad writing – hey! we have to *read* this stuff!

I think I forgot to post about mom’s knee replacement. On Friday she had a knee replacement. The end. No, really … now she is in a rehab facility (or whatever they’re called today). It’s mostly crazy old people who never leave. Mom’s roommate is recovering from pneumonia, so she’s been less crazy as the days progress. As long as mom does her exercises and learns how to take care of her new knee she should be released from this place next week. She should be really motivated to do what she’s told because she really wants to go home. She misses her cats and I think they miss her too.

Why do they call it the Terrible Two’s? I think it should be called the I-Want-To-Pierce-My-Eardrum Three’s. Good god my kid whines! This morning I heard him in his room and when I peaked in he was sitting on his bed. He smiled when he saw me, got up and informed me that he had peepee and poopoo in his pullup in a very big-boy voice. I ushered him into the bathroom to take care of it (no words of recrimination, just a let’s take care of it attitude) and after I got his pajama’s off and was separating the pullup (it has tear away sides) a switch flicked in his brain and out came Whiny boy. Gahhh!!!

Sarah is now making syllables. We had dinner at the neighbor’s on Sunday night and she and Mark carried on a very lively conversation – both using only about 3 syllables each. Her most intelligible syllable is “da”. Dadadadadada … no she doesn’t connect it to “dada” yet. But soon. Thomas said she kisses him and my MIL says she waves at her. I just get the drool.

She is also passing things from one hand to the other. Yet another milestone. Very cool! She is not rolling over yet though. Someone mentioned to me that stuff like rolling over, crawling, and walking come later to bigger babies. More weight to move. But she has good form when she lays on her stomach. Good back arch they say. She wants to roll over, reach for things, and go … she just doesn’t know how yet.

The dinner front hasn’t been all that exciting. I made stir fry last night and used hoisin sauce. Yummy. Chicken, zucchini, mushrooms, baby brocolli, and spinach … lots of garlic and ginger too. I wished I’d brought the leftovers for lunch. I have a salad and pita bread from Trader Joe’s. Trying to be healthy and all of that. I guess the muffins that someone brought in this morning don’t exactly count.

In a few hours the holiday weekend starts. We’re not doing anything exciting. I’m sure Thomas is dismayed by that. We just don’t seem to do enough to satisfy his need to do things. I’d like to get Jonah’s room painted and Christopher and Sarah moved into it. But I don’t think that is what Thomas has in mind when it comes to doing something.

08/25/08 Profound advice August 25, 2008

I love reading blogs, especially women who write with a bit of snark. Heather Armstrong writes Dooce and happens to be one of those women. I read this on her blog today:

“No matter what horrible thing you’re going through, when it’s all over it only takes three seconds to sum it up. Remember that.”

08/22/08 Scrapblog August 22, 2008

This combines two things I like … blogging and doing things electronically. I did a Scrapblog of our morning at the beach in Fort Bragg. I’m hoping I can print it out and incorporate it with the scrapbook I’ve already done. So far it has been fun. It has premade templates with a bunch of backgrounds, stickers, and frames.

08/20/08 Morning Show August 20, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 2:33 am

For those of you just joining us, it’s 2am. Welcome to the “Liz has Insomnia Show”! Thomas is snorning and Sarah is making little grunting/hiccup noises. Don’t know if Jonah is home and Christopher is at Grandma and Grandpa’s. Because Thomas woke up at 4:17am yesterday morning … and since he woke up, I woke up … I made sure to go to bed early last night. I was asleep before 9:30pm. Unfortunately I woke up at 10:30pm to turn off the TV that someone left on (yes honey, that would be you.) I woke up again at 1:37am and here I sit. It’s now 2:11am. The 2am show isn’t usually very exciting because I don’t think all of my synapses are firing properly, thereby making me think I am charming and witty but really I am just an idiot rambling at 2am.

I am still working on the scrapbook from our weekend in CA. I found a few more pictures I added to it, then of course I had to take the stupid thing apart and rearrange the pages. That sort of ruined the spine, or at least gave it osteoporosis. I want to make a mini-book for Christopher’s 3rd birthday. I was thinking about making the book part, rather than buying one. They’re kind of expensive. I have enough book covers laying around that it would be fairly easy to make the cover. I could either bind it like I do my journals or just do rings. Making holes in book board would be a challenge though. Mary made Christopher a cool photo book by just laminating the picture pages … interrupted by a baby who needed her binky … and then using 1 inch rings. Then if she (or we) want to add pages we can just open the rings. I love the way little kids are fascinated by seeing themselves and people they know in pictures. And Christopher is no exception to this.

My hair is finally long enough to put in a shorty pony tail. I cannot tell you how good it feels to get the hair off of my neck, especially now that it is so humid! Granted, I look like a dork, but at 2am and in the privacy of my own home I am more than ok with it.

The short lens on my camera broke a few weeks ago. I bought it at Costco and they have a very friendly Concierge service to help you with these sorts of things. They connected me with Nikon and we arranged to send in my lens for repair. I figured it would still be under warranty, since I got it at Christmas. No such luck. It’s going to cost $90 to be repaired and I can get a new lens for $103 (including shipping). First of all, why isn’t it covered under warranty? And second, why would I want to pay almost what it would cost for a new lens to end up with a repaired lens when I could just have a new lens. Gah! I have been using my longer lens (55-200) and it is a fine lens, but when you want to take pictures from a distance of less than 10 feet it gets difficult. It was great at the beach in CA because I could take pictures from further away.

I heard the tell tale thump of Sarah’s feet hitting her crib (she lifts them up and then lets them fall in a hearty thump). I don’t think she’s asleep either. We put her to bed shortly after 6pm for what we thought was her usual 30 minute evening nap. She never woke up from it. It is never good for a baby to be awake at 2:31am, it sets a bad precedence. Actually, it’s not good for a mommy to be awake at 2:31 either, it makes her cranky in the morning.

08/18/08 Mommy again August 18, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 9:39 pm

It’s funny how our kids see us. I wore a skirt to work today because most of my work appropriate clothes were in the laundry. When I came home from work Christopher pointed at my jacket and asked what it was. I told him it was a jacket. Then he pointed at my skirt and asked what it was. I told him it was a skirt. He said, “Mommy, I like that skirt.” It’s nice to be noticed.

A little later I went upstairs to change out of my work clothes. He came up and watched me change. After I’d gotten my t-shirt and capri pants on he exclaimed, “You’re Mommy again!” Apparently I am “Mommy” when I am in casual clothes. I wonder who he thought I was when I was wearing the jacket and skirt?

08/16/08 We are lame … tales of a date August 16, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liz @ 9:12 am

Thomas and I are the lamest couple. We had a babysitter, we had a gift card to a g00d restaurant and after dinner we didn’t know what to do. First we had to drive out to my in-law’s house to water their plants. It has been in the high 90’s and last night was still very warm. We stopped by Fern Ridge Reservoir and enjoyed the lake and a great breeze. There were people sailing, jet skiing, and inner tubing. We headed back to town and ended up visiting an acquaintance of Thomas’ at the Eugene Hostel (the guy owns it). In our defense there wasn’t much going on downtown, probably because of the Lane County Fair. We drove around, and around, and around. At one point Thomas lamented, “I just want to DO something!” Unless it’s First Friday Art Walk, there isn’t usually a lot going on downtown, except for the homeless and the perpetually strange. We ended up at the Valley River Inn in their restaurant, Sweetwaters, for dessert and coffee. We shared a piece chocolate mousse torte cake and Thomas had coffee. We got a table outside next to the river and we could hear the music from the fair. It was nice. Then we went home to find a mess.
