And people wonder why Eugene has a reputation …

Last night Thomas & I went to an art exhibit at DIVA (downtown initiative for the visual arts) to see a painting by someone we know from church. Mary knows her to, Julie who is mom to M. and K. The kids go to one of the two schools Mary worked at. Anyway, Julie had a painting at the art exhibit and we wanted to support her and other local artists.

After perusing the exhibit we decided to wander around downtown because not only was it First Friday Artwalk, we had babysitters! So we meander around and end up at the Saturday Market stage area because we heard music. It turns out that we wandered upon the coronation event for the 2008-09 S.L.U.G. Queen. One of Mary’s friends was the 2006-07 queen. It’s quite the deal. The queen gets to be in the Eugene Celebration parade (which is next week I think) and they have community events.

Here is the link to the article in our local paper. It also has a great video of the event with the talent and coronation.

I’m glad that you had a chance to see the Slug Queen competition. It can be really funny and totally absurd. Did you know that Alan Wagner was a contestant? My kids and I held up cards so the audience could sing along. I have a picture of him in his floor-length, tie-dyed, t-shirt dress.

Julie is a good artist. She’s even taught a few classes at our school.

I remember when Al was a contestant! I never saw his costume though. We went to a coronation a couple of years ago too. They’re fun!
